What is TEF Canada
Why this matters for you
A CLB 7 in all four TEF sections adds up to 50 bonus CRS points to your Express Entry profile. Your current estimated score is 565 — French draw cut-off is 409. You already clear it. But you need the verified score to make it official.
Test at a glance
- TEF Canada is the official French test accepted by IRCC for Express Entry immigration purposes
- Available in Abuja at Alliance Française — book at least 6 weeks before your exam date
- Cost: approximately ₦180,000 – ₦220,000. Confirm current price directly with Alliance Française Abuja
- Results arrive 3–4 weeks after the exam. Valid for 2 years from the date of issue.
- For August exam: contact Alliance Française Abuja by mid-June to confirm slot availability
- Alliance Française Abuja: Aminu Kano Crescent, Wuse 2 · +234 9 291 2071
Critical rules you must know
- You must score CLB 7 in ALL FOUR sections — one weak section voids your immigration bonus
- The speaking section is face-to-face with an examiner — most people struggle here, start practising day one
- Writing must use formal French — contractions and slang will cost you marks
- You can retake the exam but pay the full fee again — prepare thoroughly the first time
- Confidence matters more than perfection in speaking — speak continuously even if imperfect
02
The four exam sections
Compréhension de l'oral — Listening
- You hear recordings — conversations, announcements, interviews — and answer MCQ questions about them
- Good news: your English listening skills transfer well. This is typically the easiest section for Anglophones
- Tip: read the questions BEFORE the audio starts so you know what to listen for
- Practice daily: French podcasts (RFI), French Netflix with French subtitles, TV5Monde
- CLB 7 target: approximately 36–42 correct answers out of 60
Compréhension des écrits — Reading
- Read articles, emails, notices, and formal texts — answer MCQ questions about comprehension and meaning
- Tip: skim for the main idea first, then return to find specific answers
- Learn key connector words: cependant (however), donc (therefore), notamment (notably), pourtant (yet), en revanche (on the other hand)
- Read one French news article daily: Le Monde (lemonde.fr), 20 Minutes (20minutes.fr)
- CLB 7 target: approximately 31–37 correct answers out of 50
Expression écrite — Writing
- Task 1: Short formal text (letter, email, notice) — approximately 60–80 words
- Task 2: Opinion essay or argument — approximately 200–250 words with clear structure
- This is the hardest section for most English speakers — requires formal grammar and structured arguments
- Master essay structure: Introduction → Argument 1 → Argument 2 → Conclusion (En conclusion...)
- Memorise opinion phrases: À mon avis... · Il me semble que... · D'une part...d'autre part... · En revanche... · Par conséquent...
- Have your iTalki tutor correct one practice essay per week — feedback is more valuable than writing alone
Expression orale — Speaking
- Task 1: Monologue on a given topic (2–3 minutes). Task 2: Dialogue/roleplay. Task 3: Defend a point of view
- The examiner evaluates: fluency, vocabulary range, pronunciation, coherence, and confidence
- Golden rule: it is better to speak confidently with small errors than to hesitate searching for perfect words
- Practise speaking out loud every single day — narrate what you're doing, talk to yourself in the mirror
- Book an iTalki tutor specifically for TEF oral practice — 2 sessions per week minimum from week 2 onwards
- Record yourself speaking for 2 minutes on a random topic, then listen back and identify errors
